Debian 8 for dedicated servers available
« on: May 21, 2015, 09:29:35 AM »

Hello

After about 2 years of development, the Debian Project has released the final version 8 (code name "Jessie") of its Linux distribution.

"Jessie" is now available for all dedicated servers and can be installed via the EUserv customer panel. Besides the standard version, a RAID1 version for increased data security is offered, too.

UEFI support, introduced in "Wheezy", has been further expanded and supplied with fixes for known firmware problems. As with Ubuntu, the new Debian also relies on systemd as standard init system. The familiar SysVInit and other systems can also be used if necessary.

On the software side "Jessie" comes with updates for MySQL (5.5.42) or MariaDB (10.0.16), the GNU compiler in version 4.9.2, Perl 5.20.2 and much more. As kernel the Linux kernel in version 3.16 is used. Due to the "LTS Initiative" Debian 8 (as its two predecessors) will be supplied with updates for 5 years.

Some new features include:

- systemd as init system
- Linux kernel 3.16
- over 43.000 software packages available
- GNU Compiler Collection 4.9.2

kind regards,
Katrin
