One month after the release of Redhat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7, the CentOS community draws and presents CentOS 7. The new release can be installed in a standard or RAID1 version for dedicated servers via the customer panel.
The on Upstream-RHEL based distribution is fully binary compatible with RHEL. CentOS is known for its long time support cycles (currently until mid-2024) and for its stability.
CentOS 7.0 comes with a 3.10 kernel. In terms of software, the new release is up to date. So MariaDB is in version 5.5, Apache in version 2.4 and PostreSQL in version 9.2 available.
With Samba in version 4.1 and enhancements on LDAP, CentOS 7 should also be better integrated in Windows environments. Also GRUB2 is available.
For the virtualization of CentOS as a guest on Xen, VMware, KVM as well as Hyper-V, appropriate drivers are available. Should even be virtualized on the host, CentOS 7 continues on KVM as default.
Major changes include:
- systemd as standard Init System
- support for container virtualization
- Kernel 3.10
- Kernel-Live-Patch Tool "kpatch"
- btrfs continues as a technology preview
